The Top of the Deck

“In 1962 while student-teaching at Sartorette, I was told that the school superintendent, Ace, wanted to see me at his office. It turns out I was being offered a teaching contract for the following school year. My first thoughts of Ace when signing that contract in the bedroom/office was that ‘Ace’ must be his nickname because he was at ‘the top of the deck.’ That was an impression that has endured ever since that meeting. He was a man who lived his life as a great role model for all with his friendliness, can-do attitude, ever-present smile, caring for others, and fairness. His taking the time to attend retirement gatherings for employees and the bi-annual luncheons of retired employees was appreciated. We will miss “the top of the deck.”

  1. Ace was one of a kind!! A man with a terrific sense of humor!! Of course, he had his faults…. I kept trying to make him a Chicago Bears and St. Louis Cardinals fan but alas, he stayed loyal to his San Francisco teams! 🙂 However, he did have a fondness for my Kansas Jayhawks which I appreciated!! Did you know he was coached by Pop Warner? Yes, THE Pop Warner!!!

I will miss his fun notes congratulating me when my teams did well — and the pride of his own teams! He touched countless lives in his long life — each one made better for having know Ace!! I’ll always love you, my dear cousin!
